Google Play icon requirements: 512px, full square, no shadow
The Play Store icon has its own rules, apart from your launcher icon: a 512px PNG, full square, under 1MB, no rounded corners or shadow. What each rule means.
The icon in your Play Store listing is not taken from your app. It is a separate upload in the Play Console, and it has its own rules. Get them wrong and the listing looks slightly off next to everyone else's.

Why full square
Google Play masks every icon to the same rounded shape, with a corner radius of about a fifth of the icon's size. If your file already has rounded corners or a shadow, you get corners inside corners, and a shadow on top of a shadow. Fill the square edge to edge and let Play do the rest.
Match the launcher icon
Users see the Play icon before they install and the launcher icon after. They should be recognisably the same design. The launcher version is made of adaptive layers, explained in Android adaptive icons; the Play icon is a flattened full-bleed version of the same thing.
Do not add badges
Google's listing guidelines discourage text and badges in the icon, such as "free", "sale" or rankings. They also age badly. Keep the icon to the mark.
Feature graphic and screenshots are separate
The listing also asks for a 1024 by 500 feature graphic and screenshots. They are where text and marketing belong. The icon's job is recognition: the same shape a user will look for on their home screen after installing.
A quick check before upload
- Open the PNG and confirm it is exactly 512 by 512.
- Check the file size is under 1024 KB. A flat design is usually far below it.
- Preview it with rounded corners applied, so nothing important sits in a corner.
- Look at it at 48 pixels beside other apps in your category.
