Making an app icon with AI: what works and what to check

AI can draft app icons in minutes; most drafts fail at small sizes or cannot be edited. How to get an original, editable icon from AI, and what to check first.

Asking an image model for an app icon gives you something attractive in seconds. Getting from there to a shipped icon is where it goes wrong: the design turns to mush at small sizes, a small change means starting again, and the export is one square PNG when the stores want a dozen files.

Two ways to use AI for icons

Image modelVector or spec-based
OutputA raster imageSVG from a description
Change one detailRegenerate and hopeEdit one property
SizesUpscale or redrawExact at every size
Consistency across variantsHardBuilt in

Image models are great for exploring moods. For the final icon, a vector made from a spec is easier to live with, because you will want to change it.

Write a brief, not a prompt

Name the app, what it does, who uses it and a colour. The motif follows from what it does. We wrote a short template in how to write an app icon brief.

Check before you ship

  1. Small sizes. View at 60 and 29 pixels on dark. See app icons at small sizes.
  2. Originality. It must not resemble a well-known app's icon. AI can reproduce familiar designs without telling you.
  3. Platform rules. Opaque and square for iOS, layers for Android, inset for macOS, a safe zone for PWAs.
  4. Uniqueness. If others use the same tool with a similar prompt, would they get your icon? Tools that seed differently per user reduce that risk.

App Icon Foundry is our take on this, inside Claude Code: a one-line brief becomes a contact sheet of original SVG icons in seven styles, each a small spec you change in plain words, and one export writes every platform's files. Each install seeds from its own salt and keeps a record of what you exported, so two people with the same brief get different icons and you never get a repeat.

Questions

Can AI make a usable app icon?

It can make a good starting point quickly. Whether it is usable depends on three checks: it reads at small sizes, it is original, and you can export it correctly for each platform.

Are AI image generator icons editable?

Usually not easily. A raster image from an image model has to be regenerated to change it. An icon made as SVG or from a spec can be changed one property at a time, such as the colour or the eyes.

Can I use an AI-generated icon commercially?

Check the terms of the tool you use and make sure the icon does not copy an existing app's icon or trademark. Originality matters more than the tool.
