Every app icon size you need, for iOS, Android, macOS and the web
The app icon sizes iOS, Android, Google Play, macOS, favicons and PWAs ask for, in one table: what each is for, and how to generate them from a 1024px master.
An app icon is one design exported many times. Each platform wants its own sizes, shapes and rules, and it rejects or quietly mangles an icon that ignores them. This is the list, from one 1024px master.
iOS and iPadOS
| Use | Points | Pixels |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | 1024 | 1024 x 1024 |
| iPhone home screen | 60 @2x, @3x | 120, 180 |
| iPad home screen | 76 @2x | 152 |
| iPad Pro home screen | 83.5 @2x | 167 |
| Spotlight | 40 @2x, @3x | 80, 120 |
| Settings | 29 @2x, @3x | 58, 87 |
| Notifications | 20 @2x, @3x | 40, 60 |
No transparency and no rounded corners: iOS applies the mask itself. Recent Xcode versions accept one 1024px image and generate the rest. More on the rules in iOS app icons and transparency.
Android
| Use | Size |
|---|---|
| Adaptive icon layers (foreground, background, monochrome) | 108 x 108 dp each, 432px at xxxhdpi |
| Legacy launcher icon | 48 dp: 48, 72, 96, 144, 192px across densities |
| Google Play listing | 512 x 512 PNG |
Adaptive icons are the part people get wrong, because the launcher crops the layers into whatever shape the phone uses. See Android adaptive icons and Google Play icon requirements.
macOS
A .icns file holding 16, 32, 128, 256 and 512 point sizes at 1x and 2x, so up to 1024px. Unlike iOS, macOS icons carry their own shape and shadow inside the canvas. The macOS app icon shape has the template.
Web and PWA
| File | Size | Used by |
|---|---|---|
| favicon.ico | 32 x 32 | Older browsers, tools that ask for /favicon.ico |
| icon.svg | Any | Modern browser tabs |
| apple-touch-icon.png | 180 x 180 | iOS home screen bookmarks |
| Manifest icons | 192 and 512 | Android install, PWA |
| Maskable icon | 512, safe zone inside | PWA on Android launchers |
Favicon sizes has the tags to paste in.
Design once, at the smallest size
The master is 1024px, but the icon is judged at 29 to 60px on a crowded screen. Check the design there before exporting anything, as in app icons at small sizes.
App Icon Foundry does the whole list with one command: from one design it writes iOS full bleed, Android adaptive layers, the Google Play image, macOS, favicons and PWA maskable icons into one folder, with the manifest lines and head tags to paste in.
Questions
What size should an app icon master be?
1024 by 1024 pixels, ideally drawn as a vector. Every platform's sizes can be generated from it, and the App Store asks for 1024 directly.
Do I still need every iOS size?
Recent versions of Xcode can take a single 1024 by 1024 image and produce the smaller sizes for you. The sizes still exist on the device; you just do not have to export them by hand.
Is one PNG enough for Android?
Not for a modern app. Android launchers use adaptive icons made of a separate foreground and background layer, plus a monochrome layer for themed icons. A single square PNG is the legacy fallback.
