Crawled, currently not indexed: what it means and what fixes it

Google visited the page and chose not to index it. What this Search Console status means, how it differs from discovered, and the changes that get pages in.

The Page indexing report in Search Console lists reasons pages are not indexed. Most are mechanical: a noindex tag, a redirect, a canonical pointing elsewhere. Crawled, currently not indexed is different. Nothing is broken. Google read the page and decided, for now, that it was not worth indexing.

Crawled vs discovered

StatusWhat happenedUsual cause
Discovered, currently not indexedKnown, not yet crawledNew site, few links, crawl scheduling
Crawled, currently not indexedCrawled, not indexedThin, duplicate or low-value page

Why pages end up here

  • The page repeats what other pages, on your site or elsewhere, already say.
  • It is thin: a tag page, a nearly empty category, a short post.
  • It is near-duplicate with another URL, such as a filtered or paginated version.
  • The site is new, and Google is indexing it slowly while it learns what it is.

What fixes it

  1. Make the page worth indexing. Answer the search better than what ranks now, with first-hand detail.
  2. Link to it from your strong pages. Internal links signal importance; see internal linking for a blog.
  3. Merge near-duplicates. Two weak pages on one topic become one strong page, with a redirect.
  4. Keep low-value URLs out. Filtered and parameter URLs should canonicalise to the main page.
  5. Then request indexing once, as in Request indexing.

When to leave it alone

Some URLs should not be indexed: feed URLs, paginated archives, thank-you pages. Their presence in this list is not a problem. Check the examples Search Console gives before worrying.

GA4 + Search Console Setup gets Search Console verified with your sitemap submitted, so this report exists for your site from week one and you can see which pages are and are not indexed.

Questions

What does crawled, currently not indexed mean?

Google fetched the page but decided not to add it to the index for now. It is not an error in your setup; it is a judgement about the page, often that it adds little beyond other pages.

How is it different from discovered, currently not indexed?

Discovered means Google knows the URL exists but has not crawled it yet. Crawled means it has read the page and chose not to index it.

Will it fix itself?

Sometimes, especially on new sites, where Google indexes cautiously at first. If a page stays in this state, improving it and linking to it from strong pages is what changes the outcome.
