GA4 not collecting data: a checklist that finds the cause

GA4 shows nothing, or says data collection is not active. A checklist from the quickest check to the rarest cause: tag, ID, consent, blockers, CSP and delays.

An empty GA4 property is usually one of a handful of causes, and they can be ruled out in order, fastest first. Most of the time the answer is in the first three checks.

1. Look at Realtime, not the reports

Standard reports can lag by a day or two. Open Reports, then Realtime, and visit your site in another tab. If you appear within a minute, collection works and you only need to wait.

2. Is the tag on the live page?

Open the live site, view source and search for G-. Frameworks sometimes load the tag only in production, or only in development. Check the deployed page, not your local one.

3. Is it the right ID?

The G- ID on the page must match the web stream in the property you are looking at. It is easy to have two properties and to be staring at the wrong one. See the GA4 measurement ID.

4. Is a request going out?

In the browser's network tab, filter for collect. You should see a request to google-analytics.com/g/collect or a regional variant. No request means the tag did not run; a request with an error status means it was refused.

5. Blockers and consent

  • Test in a clean profile with no extensions. Ad blockers commonly block GA.
  • If consent defaults deny analytics_storage and your banner never grants it, basic consent mode sends nothing. See consent mode v2.
  • Global Privacy Control or a do-not-track rule on your site may be doing its job. We handle that in Global Privacy Control.

6. Content Security Policy

A strict CSP must allow googletagmanager.com for the script and Google Analytics domains for the requests. The console shows CSP violations in red.

7. Filters

An active internal traffic filter drops your own visits. If you are testing from the office IP you excluded, you will see nothing. See excluding internal traffic.

GA4 + Search Console Setup ends by checking the tag is live on your deployed page, so a silent tag is caught at setup rather than a week later.

Questions

How long does GA4 take to show data?

The Realtime report shows visits within seconds to a minute. Standard reports can take 24 to 48 hours to fill in, so an empty report on day one is not necessarily a problem.

Why does GA4 say data collection isn't active?

GA4 has not received hits for that stream in the last 48 hours, or ever. It usually means the tag is not on the live page, uses a different measurement ID, or is blocked.

Do ad blockers stop GA4?

Many do, and so do some browsers' tracking protection. Test in a clean browser profile with no extensions before assuming the tag is broken.

Or skip the afternoonand drop one in.
