Hit your Claude Code weekly limit? What to do next

The weekly limit stops work until it resets, which can be days away. How to find the exact reset, your options in the meantime, and how to avoid the surprise.

Claude Code on a Pro or Max plan has a weekly limit alongside the five-hour one. The five-hour one is an interruption; the weekly one can mean days. Hitting it mid-project is the moment you most want to know two things: exactly when it resets, and what you can do until then.

Find the exact reset

Claude Code knows the reset time and passes it to your status line as rate_limits.seven_day.resets_at, in epoch seconds. Turn it into a day and time; the usage limit reset time shows the command. It is rarely "Monday at midnight"; it depends on when your window began.

Your options

  • Wait. Plan the non-Claude parts of the work: reviews, writing, testing by hand.
  • Change plan. A higher plan has higher limits. Check the current plans on claude.ai.
  • Use an API key. Claude Code can run on a Console API key billed per use, separate from your subscription's limits.
  • Use the limit more carefully next week. See below.

Why it arrives as a surprise

Claude Code shows usage when you ask for it and warns as you approach a limit, but the percentage is not on screen while you work. The weekly window also fills slowly, so a steady few days can use most of it without a single heavy session to notice.

Making the week last

  • Keep sessions focused, and clear them between unrelated tasks. See when to use /compact.
  • Trim what is loaded every turn: project instructions and installed skills.
  • Remember every session counts, including ones left running in other terminals.
  • Watch the percentage and its reset during the week, not at the end.

Capsule Status Line puts the weekly limit on screen as a capsule with the reset inside it, such as "wk 93% · rs Mon 28 Sep 5:50AM", turning amber and then red as it fills, so the end of the week is never a surprise.

Questions

When does the Claude Code weekly limit reset?

At a fixed time seven days into its window, which Claude Code reports as resets_at. It is not necessarily midnight or Monday. A status line can show it as an exact day and time.

Does the weekly limit cover all my sessions?

Yes. Usage limits belong to your account, so every Claude Code session, and use of Claude elsewhere on the same plan, counts toward them.

Can I keep working after hitting the limit?

Options depend on your plan and settings: waiting for the reset, moving to a higher plan, or using an API key billed per use. Check the options Claude Code and your account settings show you.
