How long does it take to rank on Google?
Indexing can take days; ranking on a new site usually takes months. What happens in between, what speeds it up, and why nobody honest can promise you a date.
The honest answer has two parts. Getting a page into Google's index is usually quick. Getting it to rank for a search people care about takes longer, especially on a new site, and depends on things you only partly control.
The stages
| Stage | Typical time | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Discovered | Hours to days | A sitemap, links from other pages |
| Crawled and indexed | Days to weeks | Site quality, internal links, requesting indexing |
| Ranking for specific searches | Weeks to months | How well the page answers, the site's track record |
| Ranking for broad searches | Months to years | Depth of coverage, links from other sites |
Google's own advice says changes can take from a few hours to several months to be reflected, and that rankings keep settling after that.
Why new sites are slower
A new site has no history, few links and few pages. Google indexes it cautiously and tests its pages in results before trusting them. The first rankings usually come from specific, long searches with weak competition, which is why a new site's plan should start there; see keyword research for a new site.
What speeds it up
- Search Console set up with a sitemap from day one. See Search Console for a new site.
- Posts that answer better than what ranks now.
- Internal links from your existing pages to each new one.
- Links from relevant sites, earned, never bought.
- Publishing steadily, so the site keeps growing while early posts mature.
Be wary of promises
Google's own guidance on hiring an SEO warns that no one can guarantee a number one ranking. A promise of page one in thirty days is a reason to walk away.
SEO Blog Writer says the same thing on its listing: expect weeks to months. What it does is keep you publishing a checked post each week, so the blog is still growing when the early posts start to rank.
Questions
How long until Google indexes a new page?
Often a few days on a site Google already crawls, and longer on a brand-new one. Submitting a sitemap and requesting indexing can help it get found sooner.
How long until a new site ranks?
Usually weeks to months, and longer for competitive searches. Google has said it can take months for changes to have an effect in search.
Can anyone guarantee a first-page ranking?
No. Google itself warns against anyone who guarantees rankings. Nobody outside Google controls them.
