Do Claude skills trigger when you prompt in another language?
If your team writes prompts in Hindi, Spanish or a mix, test whether an English description still matches them. What to check, and what to add when it does not.
Many teams do not prompt in English all the time. Some mix languages in one sentence. A skill described in English may still be picked up for those prompts, or it may not, and the only way to know is to test with the prompts people really write.
Test in the languages you actually use
- Collect five real prompts per language your team uses for this job.
- Include mixed-language ones if that is how people write.
- Run them alongside the English set and compare which fire.
If some languages miss
Add the key domain words people use in that language to the description, in a natural sentence, and retest. Do not translate the whole description; it doubles the length for little gain. Keep technical nouns as people type them, which is often still in English.
The testing method is the same as for any skill: build a trigger test set, with a language column added.
Questions
Do I need to write skill descriptions in every language my team uses?
Usually not. Start with a clear English description and test it with prompts in the other languages your team actually uses. Add terms only where the test shows gaps.
What about mixed-language prompts like Hinglish?
Test them specifically. Technical nouns often stay in English inside mixed prompts, which tends to help matching, but that is worth confirming rather than assuming.
Should the skill's output be in the prompt's language?
That is a choice for the skill body. If users expect replies in their language, say so in SKILL.md; the description only governs whether the skill is picked.
